I say the animated version is #1 because it is closest of all to Leroux's novel. Next would be the 2004 versions based on Webber's musical, and finally, I say the Charles Dance version (love the masks!)

Okay,before I even decide I must ask...
Have you seen the 1916 film?!It's like...a legend in my yahoo group!I heard it was a lost film!Is it really available somewhere?!
And I'm not sure I was even aware of some of those,but I think I'll stick with ALW's,since it is the one that led me to...everything Phantom thing I love today.

It is a lost film, much like Lon Chaney's 'London After Midnight' and 'Nosferatu: Eine Symphonie des Grauens.' However, like these mentioned films, images and distorted copies 'slip through the vaults.' Someone in another community was talking about it to me and allegedly saw photos somewhere... I wish I had.

I'm sucker for the Lon Chaney movie. I've liked it since I was a little kid. I'm a big fan of the classic Universal monsters.

Hm. I suppose I can't say; as I've yet to see pretty much any of them other than the 2004 version. Perhaps one day I shall.

For me, there's no other version that can be compared(other than the musical, but that's not a movie).
But I love Patrick Wilson's Raoul from the '04 movie. So that's a possible comparison, just because he's in it.

Yes, which is why I dislike the 2004 film of ALW's. They sexed it up too much- open shirts, a terribly toned-down deformity. It irritates me.
Although it is also my favorite Phantom film
seconded only by the animated version and Lon Chaney's!

Gerry was too sexy I suppose, although I'm certainly not complaining! I think the ALW phantoms are perfect because there needs to be a balance between scaryness and sexyness (sp?), and I think this is achieved in the musical. Earl and JOJ and especially good at it!
