The original Gaston Leroux 'Phantom of the Opera' novel, or Susan Kay's 'Phantom' novel?

I pick Leroux because, to me, it is the original. Though Kay does a wonderful job, without Leroux, we would not have Kay's version, or even this forum! And think; no ALW musical! affraid

Leroux all the way. I read Leroux first, it's the book that began everything. I found the Kay book to be an interesting read if it were a stand alone, but I wouldn't consider it part of the POTO lore. It's like considering 'Scarlett' part of Margaret Mitchell's 'Gone With The Wind' story. It ain't happening.

She really didn't cover his deformity very well. It wasn't well described and it seemed to change. I think she forgot what she wrote in previous chapters as she went along.

She explained he had no nose, creepy veins, distorted skin, etc. during Madeleine's narration. In my opinion, she was wonderful, and I've read her book more times than Leroux's. It's just, his is the original. Without him, there would BE NO POTO!

But you see, it was a brief description, even during the Madeleine section. There was really no other mention of his appearance during the rest of the book.

Font...? We must have different copies. I have 8 editions and all have easily-readable font Razz

Kay uses a lot of large words and wonderfully, darkly morbid metaphors. She is such a great author...
It is not hard to comprhend if you have a high level of intelligence for grammar.

I think its that one with the face that really looks like a skull, with black eyes and yellow bead pupils and no nose.

Im with you on that one. I wanted that cover so bad but B&N only had 3 other covers and the fancy B&N series cover but I like when the words are close and not to far apart it makes it seem easy to read. And the one where it was really close had that cheap type of cover. The one thats just paper and no plastic surface so I just went with the one that ALW used for his play.
