Does anyone think Leroux may have been inspired by Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre Dame, in terms of writing Phantom of the Opera?
I mean, they both contain
-a deformed man living in Paris, hiding from the world in odd places
-the man being in love with a beautiful woman
-the man being caught in a love triangle
-the man being skilled at something
it's a possibility. I was watching Lon Chaney's Hunchback and then POTO last night, and love the similarities
