Does anyone think Leroux may have been inspired by Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre Dame, in terms of writing Phantom of the Opera?

I mean, they both contain
-a deformed man living in Paris, hiding from the world in odd places
-the man being in love with a beautiful woman
-the man being caught in a love triangle
-the man being skilled at something

it's a possibility. I was watching Lon Chaney's Hunchback and then POTO last night, and love the similarities Very Happy

Thats interesting, I'd never seen that connection before. But, I don't know enough about Hunchback to add anything useful.

that wasn't too bad---esmeralda dies in the book, and quasimodo goes to the cemetery and hugs her corpse, also eventually dying.

the end is so sad! these construction worker's unearth a pauper grave and find quasimodo's skeleton embracing her's and when they try to tear them apart, both skeletons crumble to dust.

And the musical stage version is similar to the cartoon-same songs and such Very Happy

Is Hugo a good writer? I'm also planning on reading Les Mis, which judging by the size of it will take months.

I have JOJ and Celia from 2002 and Earl and Rachel Barrell from 2006. When I have enough money I want Howard McGillin and Sandra Jospeh too.
Yes, lol, hint taken, I'll have to work out how to get it from the DVD to the computer!

I think it is a strong possibility. The similarities are too close.
I've heard it said that Leroux was a fan of Trilby, which tells the story of a mysterious composer who falls in love with a young dancer, or something Razz

Hunchback is a great novel, and too coincidental for mere similarities to Phantom. Even down to the idea of dying of a 'broken heart'.

I'm one in believeing that Leroux based the book on a series of real events based on one man and the woman he loved. I rekon the French Government would know all about that...

There were real events that the novel incidents may be based off- a falling chandelier that killed a concierge, a soprano being kidnapped, the underground lake, the discovery of a human skeleton in the catacombs...But these may only be coincidences

I don't believe in coincidence. I think there was something behind it. Its not like the first time something like that has happened. I've been looking into it and its really interesting. I'm trying, at the moment, to retrieve a photograph of Erik and Charles Garnier taken by Alfred Clark. It is proveing... difficult.

Someone posted it on the net a while back but I believe she had a few... problems with the FG so she had to close the site. I'm sure, someone, somewhere saved that photo. It has to be somewhere.

Uh-huh.
Anyhow, back to Hunchback being an inspiration.
I just reread POTO and Erik's constant wallowing in self-pity are so reminiscent of Quasimodo's sadness and loss that it is hauntingly eerie.

The books are very similiar.
Deformed main character. (Erik/ Qausimodo)
Beautiful maiden. (Christine / Esmeralda)
Handsome rival (Raoul / Phobeus)
And then you have the book based round a building, Notre Dame, Garnier Opera House.
The main characters both meet tragic ends and have had troubles since childhood.
Erik runs away from home and Qausimodo is abandoned as a babe.

True, but Pierre runs off with the bloody goat. As for Frollo, we all know as much of a threat he was, Esme wasn't going to touch him with a stick.
