I just finished this chapter of the Leroux book and though it was so beautiful. (Its the one where Christine and Raoul are on the rooftop and Erik is listening to them while she tells Raoul all about when Erik took her to his lair). I was getting a bit bored of the book before this chapter. Its great when she is describing the moment when she took his mask off!

Oh, yes! I love this chapter, because it marks an important step of progress in Christine's life- She's betrayed Erik, and, of all times to do it, he is there, listening. I also love the way Leroux describes him as a shadow following them up to the rooftops Razz
I love this scene in Susan Kay's Phantom:
Raoul: Was he handsome? What did he look like?
Christine: He looked just like you and I- If we were dead for several months!

Its so sad Crying or Very sad

From what I remeber, it was never directly said that it was Erik listening, but it was obvious that it must be (I think!). I thought that was very clever!

Leroux describes a shadow following the two 'up from the cellars' and hints by saying things such as a sigh was heard when erik's name was mentioned, etc.

Yes, in ALW's that scene and the lair scene are the only two that can make me cry,and only on occasion.

I dont cry at all in the film. Rolling Eyes
I mean, Gerard is empathetic and all, but, it doesn't do it for me like the live stage show... I mean, when you're five feet away from JOJ or Gary Mauer, and they are sobbing into a veil [which the film lacked], it is so sad... In the film, Gerry was kind of nonchalant it seemed. I mean, he cried, but, he seemed more enraged then genuinely depressed that his love left him...

AIAOY and the reprise always make me sob when I see them live... I mean, when the Phantom is in the proscenium angels, and he has the chandelier fall and everything.. it is so sad

I can never have the patience for watching the original unless I heard peoples voices. I just would go more nuts than Michael Jackson when he sees a 12 year old.

The ALW one doesn't make me cry. The stage show didn't although I may cry with excitement next month! The Claude Rains one had me sobbing at the end last night though!

Yes, his is sad... Because he was normal before he became deformed. I love his version.
Only a few POTO are romantic... which is odd:
Lon Chaney's, Claude Raines, ALW's, the cartoon. Other are all horror... Rolling Eyes

Punjab "Christine looked up. Her face became white and drawn. Raoul looked up concerned "Christine are you-" his eyes became wide in fear. Suddenly he was PUNJABED!!!"

Thats how that chapter should have ended. MU HA HA revenge. Then Christine gets a harsh word with her true fiance and its sorted.

Laughing I think that the whole purpose of Erik not responding and allowing them to continue is to see if Christine will be faithful to him, as he dreams
